Spetses Island

Spetses is an island located in the Saronic Gulf, opposite the coasts of Ermioni and next to the island of Hydra, covering an area of 27 sg. km and with a population of 3.916 inhabitants.

Spetses is an island of great history and a remarkable naval and cultural tradition. The traditional region featuring interesting architectural elements, the rich vegetation and the crystal waters offer to the island a unique charm. The cosmopolitan island has a very well organized tourist infrastructure and every year attracts many Greeks, as well as many foreign tourists.

Spetses is the homeland of many important heroes of the Greek revolution such as Hatzigiannis Mexis and the most well known heroine of 1821, Laskarina Bouboulina, who decisively helped the fight of Greece against the conquerors.

Each year, during the second weekend of September, the anniversary of the sea Battle of Spetses (Armata) is celebrated. The event ends with the representation of the Turkish flagship explosion accompanied by spectacular fireworks.
